Tip: Affordable Data Prices for International Travel

Paul Thurrott's tip of the week on Windows Weekly 502 involves what to do with your data plan when traveling overseas. If you're on one of the major phone carriers, it's been prohibitively expensive to use your phone as usual in other countries. T-Mobile and Google Fi both have offered more affordable options to combat this issue, and those remain viable alternatives. T-Mobile offers free 2G data in over 140 countries, and Google Fi offers international data at no extra cost in over 135 countries.

Now both Verizon and AT&T are offering a more affordable way to use international data. On either AT&T or Verizon, you can pay an additional $10 a day to use your normal plan overseas. This means you also get to keep your regular phone number while traveling. This is still more expensive than T-Mobile and Google Fi, but it's a lot less expensive than paying roaming charges.
